RHINEBECK, New York (AFP) – Wedding bells aren't ringing yet, but the cash tills are, as the countdown begins in tiny Rhinebeck to Chelsea Clinton's celebrity wedding on July 31.
"It's like having the Olympics in your town," exclaimed Alex Batkin, manager of the up-market Wing and Clover arts-and-craft boutique.
Like the rest of the world, locals can only guess at details of the secrecy-shrouded marriage between Chelsea, daughter of former president Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and her investment banker beau Marc Mezvinsky.
The guest list remains under wraps, with names as varied as Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey thrown around on gossip websites, but President Barack Obama apparently is not showing.
The location is assumed to be the posh Astor Courts estate just outside Rhinebeck, almost a three hours drive from New York City, though even this has never been confirmed.
In any case, Rhinebeck, population less than 8,000, is laying out the welcome mat.
"Congratulations to Marc and Chelsea!" a poster in the window of Pete's Famous Restaurant, an old style diner, says.
"Mazel tov," reads a sign in Samuel's sweets shop, using the Hebrew for "good luck" in a nod to the Jewish Mezvinsky.
Mixed with goodwill is hunger for good business in a sleepy town shifting from rural roots to the glitzier role of retreat for New York's wealthy.
Echoing the Clinton family news blackout, no one here will openly discuss their share in the bonanza brought by the expected 400 guests at a no-expenses-spared party. But, clearly, no one wants to be left out.
One of the big winners is believed to be the picturesque Beekman Arms inn, which claims to be the oldest continuously operating hotel in the United States.
Workers were adding a lick of white paint under the roof Tuesday as staff lugged in suitcases to fully booked rooms.
Asked who was staying, the normally polite front desk clerks became stony faced.
"No comment," one told a reporter. Another conveyed the same message by raising her hands to make an X with two fingers.
Batkin's store revealed at least one success: a painting bought as a gift for the betrothed.
The picture is emblazoned "Chelsea and Marc" over a naive-style depiction of a wedding cake surrounded by trees, squirrels and a fish-filled river.
Of course, Batkin wouldn't say how much the painting went for -- or to whom.
"I just can't," he said apologetically.
Across the road at Liquors and Wines, Mike Haley said the supplier for white wine at the party would be Clinton Vineyards from the happily named nearby town of Clinton.
"It's light and dry. It goes good with fish or chicken," he said.
Haley looked wistfully at his huge selection of bottles. "I'd love to supply. I haven't had a call from them yet, though," he said.
Hoping to get at least a few financial crumbs from the wedding table, he did put some bottles of Clinton Vineyards Tribute 2009 in his storefront window.
Another entrepreneur seeking wedding joy is Rhinebeck Deli, where the menu features the Hillary Clinton-themed "Secretary of Steak."
Even the Hudson Valley Renegades, a minor league baseball team, wants to get in on the act.
Their mascot, a man dressed as a raccoon, stood at Rhinebeck's main crossroads Tuesday with a sign reading: "Chelsea Will U Marry Me?" Locals and bemused tourists grinned at the sight.
"We're trying to get a little buzz going for the team, so people come down to the park and check us out," explained teammate A.J. Tomeny.
All the excitement would implode spectacularly if it turned out Rhinebeck was not the real wedding location, but an elaborate diversion in the Clinton information war -- as a few conspiracy minded locals suspect.
The Hudson Valley News, a local weekly that has become a must-read for the growing international press corps in the town, says not to worry.
Without citing sources, the latest edition reports that the wedding will indeed take place at Astor Courts, starting at 6:00 pm (2200 GMT) Saturday and that police will shut down roads in the vicinity.
"CONGRATULATIONS CHELSEA AND MARC" the slightly premature front page banner headline reads.
Drinking coffee in Pete's Famous Restaurant, 79-year-old Ed Hammond calls the hoopla "insane."
"I think they've lost track of the two people at the center, the ones actually getting married," he said. "Myself, I'll get the hell out. I'm not much of one for crowds."
News of Chelsea Clinton's pending nuptials have gone from a rumor to a roar, and in less than two weeks, the former First Daughter will marry her longtime boyfriend, Marc Mezvinsky, in Rhinebeck, just 90 miles south of Albany.
"I kind of got a feeling now that this event is happening," said Rhinebeck Mayor Jim Reardon, "but no one has told me that it is."
Reardon has been getting his information from the Hudson Valley News, a small local newspaper that broke the story. The paper's executive editor Jim Langan already has the date pegged at July 31st, and venue at Astor Court.
Langan has the details on just about everything, including the guests: "The A-listers will be President Obama, Oprah, Steven Spielberg, Barbra Streisand."
Langan says the menu will be kosher, as Mezvinsky is Jewish, and says the rehearsal dinner will take place at Grasmere, an 18th-century "almost colonial" estate.
Langan adds, " The Clintons are staying at a home in Rhinebeck that is owned by the daughter of financier George Soros."
As for the guests, Langan says many are staying at the 200-year-old Beekman Arms Inn, rightin heart of downtown Rhinebeck: "The hotel is completely booked with Clinton guests and the hotel is being closed down on Friday night at eight."
Obama's not invited, Oprah is, and security's tight. US holds its breath as First Daughter weds
The entrance to the town of Rhinebeck, a tiny rural idyll about 100 miles north of New York, is marked by a sign reading "Mulch for Sale". The local paper, the Hudson Valley News, is packed with such reports as an account of the chicken barbecue held for senior residents of the town of Clinton – no pun intended – and the annual pig roast thrown by the Crum Elbow Sportsmen's association.
Tomorrow all that quaint small town pace will be supplanted by something far more urbane, as little old Rhinebeck becomes, for one day at least, the centre of attention of the world's most powerful country.
Roads will be blocked, hotels quarantined and the town invaded by an army of secret service agents, police and media types.
The event will be as close as modern America gets to a royal occasion, and thus must involve the Clintons (the Bushes are too uncool, the Obamas too new).
At 6pm, Hillary and Bill's daughter Chelsea will stand in front of a gathering of her most cherished and intimate loved ones — a mere 400 of them — and marry Marc Mezvinsky, her investment banker boyfriend from another, albeit more lowly, Democratic family, against a backdrop of the gently flowing waters of the Hudson river.
The event will be thoroughly Clintonesque, or rather classically Chelsea.
Born in 1980 into the governor's mansion in Little Rock, Arkansas, where Bill was the 40th incumbent, she has spent her entire life within the bubble of her parents' political fame, her every step followed by the American media as befitting the princess she isn't.
And yet she has remained a fiercely private person, barely ever granting an interview and never forcing herself into public attention.
The dichotomy is stamped into the wedding. Best estimates have put its cost at up to $3m (£1.9m), which includes security and a no-fly zone over the area; the erection of air-conditioned tents that alone cost $600,000; food from local growers and prepared by local chefs; wines from the nearby Clinton vineyards (no relation); hiring the entire Beekman Arms Inn, the oldest hotel still serving in America dating from 1766, as guest accommodation; and hiring the mansion itself, a Stanford White design that sits in 50 acres of grounds modelled on Versailles, the creation of the tycoon John Jacob Astor IV, who went down with Titanic.
And yet amid the splendour, the secrecy. All local businesses contracted for the event — hotels, caterers, florists, clothing designers, gift providers — were made to sign confidentiality agreements four months ago, even before they knew the identity of the bride.
"They were only told that this would be the A-list of A-list weddings, and they didn't need to know any more than that. Try as I might, I haven't got any one of them to talk," said Jim Langan, editor of the Hudson Valley News.
He has the distinction of breaking the scoop of the century, in Rhinebeck terms at least, revealing this month that the wedding would take place here, drawing on information supplied by what he calls the "worker bees" of the town. But he says the hush-hush quality of the event has been overwhelming.
"The Clintons made it clear they would play the economic card to local contractors — if you let anything out of the bag we will pull the deal."
Which is why several key details of the wedding are still obscure. Like who makes the dress? Chelsea and Hillary were spotted entering the New York base of Vera Wang, leading to inevitable speculation, but then Hillary was also sighted in her friend Oscar de la Renta's store, which put the spoilers on that.
We know that Bill is determined not cry at the event — he's told us so himself — and that he's lost 15lbs so as to look his best.
But the guest list remains largely private, apart from the knowledge that the Obamas will not be present, (he told us he was not invited, on The View) while Oprah probably will.
The town's shopkeepers seem determined to enter into the spirit of the thing, even if they have been cut out of the secret. The Rhinebeck Deli is selling Chelsea's Choice Wraps for $6.95 and Bill's All America roast beef for $6.25, though the owner, John Regan, says that the favourite by a long margin is a 6oz Angus sirloin called Hillary's Secretary of Steak.
"Congrats Chelsea and Marc", reads a sign outside the Portly Pig Antiques.
The Wing and Clover book store has put up a crude oil painting of a man and woman dancing on a wedding cake, and a notice in the window of Leonardo's Italian Market says: "Don't worry Chelsea, we'll have the 500 sandwiches to you in plenty of time".
So all in all, just another ordinary sunny summer's Saturday in Rhinebeck.
Just another wedding. Mulch anyone?
She's a former First Daughter, but Chelsea Clinton's wedding guestlist is fit for a queen.
President Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Barbra Streisand and ex-British Prime Minister John Major are among the 500 people asked to watch Chelsea marry Marc Mezvinsky on July 31 in upstate Rhinebeck.
The guestlist also includes filmmakerSteven Spielberg and his wife, Kate Capshaw, and media mogul Ted Turner, all according to the Hudson Valley News.
Manhattan socialite Denise Rich, ex-wife of fugitive financier Marc Rich, who won an eleventh-hour pardon from then-President Bill Clinton, is also among the invitees.
The Hudson Valley News reported that Obama would likely travel to Stewart Airportin Newburgh aboard Air Force One and then take Marine One into Rhinebeck. ButWhite House spokesman Robert Gibbsrefused to say if Obama was planning to attend the nuptials.
"Not that I'm aware of," Gibbs said.
The only child of former President Clinton and Secretary of State Clinton plans to wed Mezvinsky at the palatial Astor Court estate, the former home of John Jacob Astor 4th, a tycoon who died aboard the Titanic.
Wedding guests have already booked up the Beekman Arms Inn in Rhinebeck.
The 30-year-old bride and 32-year-old groom have reserved the sprawling GrasmereEstate on the edge of town for their rehearsal dinner.
Bubba went to the White House yesterday for a closed-door meeting with Obama and business leaders.
But it was not known if the former President personally delivered a wedding invitation to Obama.

Celebs On Clinton Wedding Invite List
Come back to RadarOnline.com for more news on the wedding as preparations progress.
What has been deemed "the wedding of the year" is only days away and wedding presents for Chelsea Clinton have been arriving at Astor Courts in Rhinebeck, New York, according to the Hudson Valley News.
Chelsea is set to marry Marc Mezvinsky July 31 at the former estate of John Astor, who perished in the Titanic.RadarOnline said the presents that arrived at Astor Courts were accepted by security away from the house and the gifts that were okay were driven to the site.
Reporters and film crews have swamped the tiny upstate New York town, though the Clintons have yet to confirm the location of Chelsea's wedding. Hillary Clinton told the Today show that even the wedding guests do not yet know the exact location of the wedding. The Hudson Valley News also reported that Chelsea's rehearsal dinner will be held at "Grasmere" in a stone barn on architect Steve Mensch's 500-acre estate.
Chelsea spent her first 11 years in Little Rock and lived in the Arkansas Governor's Mansion until her father, Bill Clinton, was elected President in 1992.

The nuptials of Chelsea Clinton are upon us, and the village of Rhinebeck, New York, is greatly anticipating her arrival. The Hudson Valley News reports—with requisite breathlessness—that a number of famous actors, famous journalists, famous politicians, and pan-professional famous people will attend Clinton’s July 31 wedding to Marc Mezvinsky, son of former congressman Edward Mezvinsky (IA-D). According to the paper, the guest list includes “Barbra Streisand, Kate Capshaw and Steven Speilberg [sic],Ă‚ former Clinton advisor Harold Ickes, Clinton money man Terry McAuliffe, former British Prime Minister John Major, historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, media mogul Ted Turner and long time Clinton friend Denise Rich.” President Obama and Oprah were also reportedly invited.
RadarOnline, in a story labeled “exclusive” despite its being nothing more than a summary of the Hudson Valley News story, notes that Rhinebeck is a favored Clinton vacation destination, lending the affair a familial, almost intimate quality. In fact, a month ago, New York reported that “Chelsea has instituted a strict no-strangers policy: She must personally know every invitee.” In light of the apparent inclusion of Ted Turner, Oprah, and Barbra Streisand, “know” perhaps connotes “has technically encountered” rather than “is a friend of.”
"Not that I'm aware of," said White House spokesman Robert Gibbs.
The Hudson Valley News is reporting that Obama is on Chelsea's guest list (as is Oprah Winfrey and a host of other celebs).
Maybe the topic surfaced today when former president Bill Clinton attended a meeting with Obama, though the White House schedule said the visit dealt with jobs and included business people involved in clean energy projects.
White House officials have also spoken with (Bill) Clinton about campaigning for Democrats in the fall elections, Gibbs said.

The FAA has declared the airspace above Chelsea Clinton's rumored wedding location a no-fly zone from Saturday afternoon until early morning Sunday, protecting the privacy and security of the couple and their famous guests.
"At the end of the day it's a wedding. Just give her her time. Who wants helicopters buzzing around," said one Rhinebeck resident.
Meanwhile, the Town of Rhinebeck is getting all gussied up, in any attempt to put its best foot forward for any famous faces that might pass by. While the guest list is still anybody's guess, Hudson Valley News Executive Editor Jim Langan expects some big names at the nuptials.
"Oprah, Speilberg, Streisand, Tom Hanks. The old Lincoln Bedroom regulars," Langan said.
People watchers who came early on Thursday may not have gotten a star studded show but did get a front row seat to a media circus.
Camera crews staked out the Beekman Arms with photographers trolling village sidewalks for days.
"It's great for Rhinebeck. It's not only put us on national news, it's put us on international news," said one Rhinebeck resident.
"We heard there was a lot of media up here so we thought we'd come see some of the excitement with the media and we've seen a lot. Every corner just about," said another.
One person who won't be caught by the paparazzi in Rhinebeck this weekend is President Barack Obama. When asked about the wedding on Wednesday, he told the ladies of "The View" he wasn't invited.
